Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Cutting board
  • Sharp knife
  • Measuring cups
  • Measuring spoons
  • Wooden spoon
  • Whisk
  • Blender or immersion blender
  • Glass jar with lid for storage

Ingredients

  • 2 cups water
  • ½ cup tomato ketchup
  • ½ cup dried blueberries finely minced
  • ¼ cup light brown sugar packed
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon sriracha sauce
  • 1 teaspoon liquid smoke
  • Salt to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper to taste

Instructions

Step 1

  • Place water, ketchup, minced dried blueberries, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, balsamic vinegar, Dijon mustard, sriracha, and liquid smoke into a medium saucepan. Stir until everything is evenly mixed.

Step 2

  • Set the pan over medium heat. Stir frequently while bringing the mixture to a gentle simmer, preventing the sugar from sticking to the bottom.

Step 3

  • Reduce the heat to low and cook for about 20 minutes. Continue stirring occasionally as the blueberries soften and the sauce naturally thickens.

Step 4

  • Taste the mixture before adding salt and black pepper. Blend until smooth if a silky consistency is preferred, or leave slightly chunky for extra texture.

Step 5

  • Remove the saucepan from the heat and allow the sauce to cool completely. Transfer it into a clean glass jar, seal tightly, and refrigerate before serving.

Notes

Recipe Note: For a richer blueberry taste, allow the sauce to rest in the refrigerator for several hours before serving. The resting period helps the ingredients blend naturally, producing a smoother texture and deeper overall taste.
This blue BBQ sauce recipe also thickens slightly as it cools, making it excellent for brushing onto grilled foods or serving as a dipping sauce.
